L’ancien hôtel des Gouverneurs
À droite, dominant la Sarthe, on aperçoit l’ancien hôtel des Gouverneurs de la ville. Datant du XVe siècle, il arbore le blason des Ducs d’Alençon qui en firent leur demeure. Il devient presbytère de 1895 à 2025.
Une maison de « Passe » ! Pendant la Révolution, ce bel hôtel est vendu. Il est habité sans discontinuité à partir de 1817 par la famille Passe. Noël Eugène fut maire de Beaumont de 1865 à 1870. On peut donc avancer avec certitude que l’ex-presbytère fut précédemment et cela sans ambiguïté… une maison de Passe !

The former Governors’ Hotel
On the right, overlooking the Sarthe, you can see the former Governors’ Hotel of the city. Dating from the 15th century, it bears the coat of arms of the Dukes of Alençon, who made it their residence. It served as a presbytery from 1895 to 2025.
A ‘Passe’ house! During the Revolution, this beautiful mansion was sold. From 1817 onwards, it was continuously inhabited by the Passe family. Noël Eugène was the mayor of Beaumont from 1865 to 1870. Therefore, it can be stated with certainty that the former presbytery was previously, and without any ambiguity… a Passe house!
Traduction note: A « Maison de passe » is a slang expression for a « brothel ».
