La rue d’Orne, entrée de la vieille ville
La rue d’Orne et la Grande rue constituent les artères principales de la ville ancienne. De nombreux commerces y prospèrent : tabac, coiffeur, bourrelier, horloger, coutelier, chapelier, sabotier, pharmacie… À droite, le magasin Lemétayer-Goupil, spécialisé dans les spiritueux, vendait aussi un peu de tout.
L’entrée dans la ville ancienne : Au centre de la rue d’Orne, tout de suite après la boulangerie actuelle, se trouvait la porte Saint André (statue) et les murs de l’enceinte médiévale. Il faut s’imaginer une porte de 6,80 m de haut et de 2,30 m de large. Elle est démolie en 1841. Les murs fortifiés de forme elliptique, épais de 2,5 m, entouraient la ville, complétés de fossés de 8 à 10 m de large !

Orne Street, entrance to the old town
Orne Street and the Main Street are the main arteries of the old town. Many shops thrive there: tobacconist, hairdresser, saddler, watchmaker, cutler, hatter, clog maker, pharmacy… On the right, the Lemétayer-Goupil store, specializing in spirits, also sold a bit of everything.
The entrance to the old town: In the middle of Orne Street, just past the current bakery, was the Saint André Gate (statue) and the walls of the medieval enclosure. One must imagine a gate 6.80 m high and 2.30 m wide. It was demolished in 1841. The fortified walls, elliptical in shape and 2.5 m thick, surrounded the town, complemented by ditches 8 to 10 m wide!
