Les bords de la Sarthe et les tanneries
Sur cette rive de la Sarthe, on trouvait tanneries, lavoirs et l’ancien hôtel des Gouverneurs (ex-presbytère), le tout, aujourd’hui, dans un cadre magnifique.
Les tanneries : Beaumont était une ville de tanneurs, avec moulin à tan et séchoirs à peaux. Les tanneries, reconstruites en 1838, sont rachetées en 1883 par Alexandre Vannier. Il est maire de Beaumont (1904 à 1906) et conseiller d’arrondissement. Après sa mort en 1906, les tanneries cessent leur activité.
Les lavoirs : Au début du XXe siècle, de nombreux lavoirs bordent la rive droite de la Sarthe. C’est un lieu de vie important pour les femmes et les hommes n’y sont pas admis. On y vient non seulement travailler mais aussi pour y bavarder. Lavandière est un dur métier, œuvrant aussi bien en été qu’en hiver dans les eaux glaciales.
L’ex-presbytère : L’ancienne hôtel des Gouverneurs (le bâtiment le plus élevé), devient presbytère de 1895 à 2025.

The banks of the Sarthe and the tanneries
On this bank of the Sarthe, there were tanneries, washhouses, and the former Governors’ hotel (formerly a presbytery), all of which are now set in a magnificent setting.
The tanneries: Beaumont was a town of tanners, with a tanning mill and hide dryers. The tanneries, rebuilt in 1838, were bought in 1883 by Alexandre Vannier. He was mayor of Beaumont (1904 to 1906) and district councilor. After his death in 1906, the tanneries ceased their activity.
The washhouses: At the beginning of the 20th century, many washhouses lined the right bank of the Sarthe. It was an important place of life for women, and men were not allowed. People came not only to work but also to chat. Being a washerwoman was a tough job, working both in summer and winter in icy waters.
The former presbytery: The old Governors’ hotel (the tallest building) became a presbytery from 1895 to 2025.
